Telasmos, a virtual breastfeeding museum: surprise yourself with its collections

Breastfeeding has been accompanying us since our origins and how could it be otherwise, although incomprehensibly some seem to dislike seeing it, this biocultural phenomenon has been part of art, advertising, photography ... Telasmos is a virtual breastfeeding museum with valuable information and curiosities that leave us speechless.

This is a website created by pediatrician José María Paricio, coordinator of the well-known website www.e-lactancia.org. and that he has just won the "Promotion of healthy habits" award for his work.

I especially like the advertising section, in which we see that, although at the beginning of the 20th century the image of the woman breastfeeding was common and was often used to sell products, it will not be until the end of that century when breastfeeding is again seen as rising value. In the middle, a "silence" forced by the popularity of artificial milks.

We can see images of mothers breastfeeding with WHO recommendations in a box of cheeses, but also advertisements of beers in which the pregnant woman is the protagonist (because it was common to recommend it to increase milk production) or certain "fortifying" foods.

Too the section of sculptures coming from the different continents I have found it beautiful to see how breastfeeding does not understand races or ethnic groups, as well as paintings, with some better known but others that we discovered surprised.

Other sections are photography, philately, humor, books, illustrations, numismatics ... That is, we find a vast catalog with all kinds of material related to breastfeeding.

Even a non-lactation section where other ways of feeding babies are presented, with a bottle (even in flagrant errors of the Red Cross to promote public health), directly from the udder of animals (I did not know that in Cuba you I trained goats for it!), breastfeeding for adults ...

All sections contain an excellent corpus of "tokens" with the complete information of each one, to better understand what we see, including origin, cultural explanation, traditions, curiosities ...

Anyway, you will miss a good time as I have done for the corpus of the Virtual Museum of breastfeeding Telasmos, with a complete "Telasmoteca" that continues to grow and that teaches us a lot about breastfeeding all over the world and the vision we have of this act in different cultures and over time.
