A baby is diagnosed with a retinoblastoma thanks to the photographs taken during her vacations

A British girl of only seven months was diagnosed with a retinoblastoma (eye cancer) following photographs taken by a professional photographer at the hotel where she was staying with her parents and brother, while enjoying family vacations .

In the snapshots shot with flash, a strange light in one of the little girl's two eyes, and when the photographer explained to her parents that this phenomenon was not normal, they decided to take her immediately to her pediatrician, where she was diagnosed with this type of childhood cancer.

The events occurred last December at a hotel in Tenerife, where the English family enjoyed a few days off. To immortalize those moments, the parents decided to hire the services of a professional photographer, who was the one who gave the alarm.

And when the photographer began to review the graphic material, she realized that one of the girl's eyes was always lit with a strange white light that nothing had to do with the red dot of the flash that was sometimes reflected in the other pupil. Therefore, he decided to warn his parents of this finding, who very worried took his daughter to the pediatrician.

The girl was immediately diagnosed with a retinoblastoma, and underwent chemotherapy for treatment. In May, when the little girl had recovered from her illness, the family returned to travel to the same hotel in Tenerife to thank the photographer who had saved her daughter's life.

Not the first time

The case of this British baby reminds us of similar ones that we have also echoed. And it is the less curious that this type of cancer can be diagnosed thanks to a flash photograph.

Retinoblastoma is a cancer that develops in early childhood, before the age of five. It's about a cancerous tumor in the retina, a layer of nerve tissue from the back of the eye that detects light and sends images to the brain.

It is not seen with the naked eye when looking into the eyes of a child, but rather to detect it, a very powerful light is used which, when it affects the pupil, makes it look white. Thus the camera flash is a quick, easy and homemade option to verify the existence of this disease.

Not surprisingly, four years ago the British association Childhood Eye Cancer Trust (CHECT) launched a campaign in which he explained to the parents that if, when taking flash pictures of their children, they verified the presence of a white light in one of the pupils, go immediately to the ophthalmologist.

Logically it is not about "flashing" the eyes of children, but having this peculiarity in mind, and not hesitating to consult with the pediatrician if we observe any strange feature in his pupils through a photograph.
