Save the Children pays tribute to little Aylan Kurdi and the 500 drowned children in the Mediterranean

Today marks two years since the death of Aylan Kurdi, the three-year-old boy who died drowned off the coast of Turkey, when his family tried to flee the war in Syria. The photo of his lifeless body shocked the world and became image of the refugee crisis which, far from improving, has worsened since then.

The Save the Children organization wanted to pay tribute to Aylan and the 500 children killed at sea at this time, to prevent them from being forgotten and to denounce the passivity of the European Union in the face of this terrible humanitarian crisis.

In the Plaza de Colón in Madrid, Save the Children recreated yesterday a beach with 500 silhouettes of drowned children, one for each child who loses his life in the Mediterranean fleeing, together with their families, from violence and conflict in Syria, according to data from the International Organization for Migration (The International Organization for Migration (IOM)) (IOM ).

With this tribute, the organization also wanted denounce the European Union their passivity in the face of this terrible situation and claim the implementation of safe and legal measures for people fleeing the conflict in their countries of origin.

And, far from improving, the refugee crisis continues to get worse, and so far this year has already claimed the lives of 2,410 people who have disappeared or died in Mediterranean waters while escaping horror in search of a new opportunity.

Save the Children has criticized "the lack of political will of the European states to prevent more people from drowning, including hundreds of children"and added that"there are currently more than 26,000 refugee children trapped in Greece and the Balkans in a terrible and degrading situation".

On the other hand, the NGO also warns of the importance of provide psychological support to fleeing Syrian children of your country because, if you don't, "we will run the risk of condemning a generation of children to a life of suffering", highlights the Public newspaper.

"It is crucial that children who have managed to escape alive receive the psychological support that helps them cope with the trauma of witnessing ruthless violence and brutality" - states Save the Children.

The memory of Aylan Kurdi

That September 2, 2015, the entire world was paralyzed by the horror of an image: that of the little one Aylan, only three years old, lying motionless on the shore of a Turkish beach.

Aylan had fled with his family from the Syrian conflict, but neither he nor his mother nor his five-year-old brother could escape the tragedy and the three they drowned in Mediterranean waters. His lifeless body reached a beach and The picture went around the world, awakening the consciences of millions of people.

But, unfortunately, the story of little Aylan is not an isolated event and UNICEF reminds us that 13 million children worldwide are suffering the blows of war, hunger, disease or child trafficking.

That is why today we join this tribute of Save the Children. For Aylan, for the 500 children killed this year at sea and for the 13 million who live and suffer every day, we cannot and should not forget. Neither today, nor tomorrow, nor ever.
