Bacon at four months? It's not a good idea

Lately watching some homemade videos of those who end up being viral I wonder how far human stupidity goes to get some "likes". Above all, if the protagonists are babies and you play with them. Someone may find it funny or adorable to see the face that a baby puts on when you try bacon, bacon or bacon at four months, but no, it is not a good idea.

It is clear that after four months the baby does not need to try anything other than breast milk (or formula), and still, it could have done "grace" (not that they cram the baby) with a fruit , with bread ... But to give fried bacon to a child of that age seems to me a bad precedent.

The general recommendation of WHO and UNICEF is to start complementary feeding after six months, until then the baby does not need anything else, not even water, since breast milk provides all the minerals and nutrients that the child needs to. If this is not possible, breastfeeding is replaced with artificial milk, but the recommendation is the same: Do not offer solid food before six months.

In our complete guide to complementary feeding we saw that meat can be introduced after six months, but the most recommended at the beginning are chicken and rabbit, because they are small animals and contain less fat.

We must wait for veal, lamb and pork as a later option. When the pig arrives, which is where the bacon comes from, we cannot choose any part of the animal either. The Nutrition Committee of the Spanish Association of Pediatrics discourages in children the consumption of visible fat from meats (such as the one in bacon or bacon).

Meat is an important source of protein, vitamin B12, iron, zinc, potassium, phosphorus and saturated fat. In pork meat its lean component (loin, sirloin, shoulder) is of good quality, low in saturated fat and rich in oleic, as is the case with Iberian ham. Conversely, bacon or bacon have a high percentage of saturated fat.

Fats are important in the children's diet, not all fats are bad and you have to make good use of them. It is recommended to eliminate the fatty part of the meats, with which, the belly, intertwined with fat, let's say it makes no sense: if we remove the fat, lean pieces remain that are easily obtained using the loin or the ham.

In addition, it is advisable to cook more steamed, cooked, iron and microwave than by frying, which is how the bacon that we see in the video has been cooked. And, finally, surely what we see in the images are proof of family eating habits that will be installed in the child.

Anyway, It is not a good idea to give bacon to a baby, or a small child, even to check the face. We will "experiment" after six months with the introduction of the most adequate and healthy complementary food. Surely they will also put faces!
