The doctors specialists in diabetes, nutrition and endocrinology demand the creation of more obesity units in all Valencian health departments, although we would add that this increase is necessary at the national level. The claim is the result of the VI Conference on Diabetes and Endocrinology between Primary Care and Specialized Care that were held recently in Alicante, hence this increase is requested for the Valencian Community.
Experts in these matters have a huge concern, and it is not for less. The obesity figures are alarming, but it is still increasing and one of the battlefields that can reduce them in the future, is the follow-up in the little ones. The problem must be tackled as soon as possible and, in our opinion, primary care should be specially promoted and it should be coordinated with endocrine specialists. It is a fair and necessary claim and more when we can verify that during the last 20 years the rate of childhood and youth obesity has tripled, going from 5% to the current 14%, a fact that is very significant.
It continues to give us the impression that the Spanish Ministry of Health does not address the problem with the necessary forcefulness and there are few initiatives and works on the serious problem of overweight and childhood obesity. Other organizations and institutions work more in this field.
It is necessary to reiterate to the satiety the serious problems that are associated with overweight and obesity, as parents we must ensure adequate development and inform ourselves about the nutritional needs and the most appropriate lifestyle for our children.
