Preventing child drowning

For some unknown cause, this year is increasing alarmingly number of people killed on beaches, swamps and pools of our country To date there are specifically 35 people in recent weeks (90 so far this summer). Only in what we have of the month of August, there are already 15 dead.

Most of the events that occurred in the pools, were accidents with children. Drowning, in fact, is one of the leading causes of child deaths in our country. This tells us that we should exercise caution, especially with younger children.

To help us, there are several mechanisms. For example, a good gadget would be the "Fall Detector" which consists of a portable alarm that is placed on the child in the form of a bracelet and has a turtle-shaped sensor that serves to prevent drowning in swimming pools, lakes or bathtubs, but not at sea, where its effectiveness decreases due to the high concentration of salt.

In addition, they have a maximum limited range of 30 meters. They cost around 300 euros and apparently it is the only safety mechanism that triggers an alarm when it comes in contact with water.

There are also other types of alarms, cheaper, that are placed on the edge of the pool and detect if something falls into the pool, so they have the inconvenience of having to be connected and disconnected continuously if we are going to take a dip.

Other measures that could help us are the placement of nets and tarpaulins that cover the pools, preventing them from accidentally falling into the pool, falling into the water. For the summer they are somewhat uncomfortable, and they are also expensive, they can leave for up to 600 euros.

It is advisable to take the children to swimming courses so that they learn to swim and so in the case of any mistake, they can defend themselves in the water. The sooner the better. It is also a great measure for kids to get in shape.

But the most important thing is common sense. Lack of surveillance accounts for 77% of cases. Do not lose sight of the children, especially the little ones, who are very curious and do not have the feeling of danger, and in a few minutes they can get confused. With a couple of minutes you lose sight of the child is enough.

Whenever they bathe they should be accompanied by an adult, especially in private pools where there are no lifeguards (80 percent of drowning occurs in these pools) and using floats, vests, sleeves and so on.

If still, we witness an accident, do not lose your temper. You have to quickly remove the child from the water, and have someone quickly call an ambulance while we begin resuscitation measures.
