New program for premature babies on October 12: fewer interventions and more humanization

It has been shown that more humanized care of premature babies has a better and faster recovery for these babies. Therefore, I am very happy to spread the news that the 12 de Octubre hospital in Madrid implements a new program for premature infants based on less interventions and more humanization.

It is an international recognition program called Individualized Care Focused on Development, also known as NIDCAP for its acronym in English (Newborn Individualized Developmental Care and Assessment Program).

The program raises a revolution in intensive neonatal therapy. Its main feature is that it highlights the needs of the baby and the family, with individualized plans, always worrying about the environmental impact on the development of prematurity, promoting skin-to-skin contact and drastically reducing medical interventions, which are done after carefully analyzing their convenience.

To avoid the overload of external stimuli that can stress these delicate beings, the light and sound conditions within the ICU have been improved, breastfeeding is encouraged and personalized monitoring protocols have been established from the moment of delivery until The child is discharged.

It has taken four years to implement this new program, including the training of doctors and nurses, renovations of the facilities and improvements in the comfort of families, with a million-dollar investment involved.

With all this, the Neonatology Service of October 12 plans to become the first NIDCAP Center in Spain this year. Without a doubt, good news to end the week.
