Today is Girls' Day in ICT

"Technology needs girls": this is one of the slogans of International Girls' Day in ICT, The technologies of the information and communication. This celebration aims to organize events in which girls and girls are invited to visit government agencies and ICT companies so that they can appreciate the opportunities that this sector holds for their future.

On April 8, 2011, the ITU (International Telecommunications Union) announced the creation of this “Girls' Day in ICT” on an international scale, which is celebrated on the fourth Thursday of the month of April of each year.

It is therefore a recent celebration, last year girls from around the world gathered to celebrate the first International Day whose meaning is to celebrate and claim the interest and abilities of girls, and encourages them to choose a career in the field of information and communication technologies.

This new “Girls' Day in ICTs” is a consequence of the ITU Conference held in Guadalajara, Mexico, in 2010, where the Resolution entitled “Incorporation of a gender policy in the ITU and promotion of gender equality was established” gender and the empowerment of women through information and communication technologies ”.

Personally I think it is an excellent initiative, because in a world where access to education is more banned for girls in so many places, in those other places where we consider ourselves more egalitarian, inequalities continue to be seen when choosing higher education .

Today our girls are in contact with technology and information just like our boys, and they should not think that they are the best or qualified to understand and study these areas. Just yesterday my students received a talk about science studies, and I was glad to see that it was a girl, a doctor, who taught it.

Because, although in some things we have made progress regarding the differences between boys and girls, for others there is still a way to go. we hope that International Girls' Day in ICT help girls be seen as experts in information and communication technologies and not just as those who use these technologies.
