The best children's films: "The cat"

In Babies and more we have already talked about one of the most famous (and one of my favorites) writers of children's stories of all time: Dr. Seuss. And although in Spain it may not be as well known as in the United States, the truth is that their stories are full of an imagination, magic and indisputable values.

With these characteristics, it was not difficult to assume that sooner or later someone would take their works to the big screen. "El Grinch", "Horton" or more recently "Lorax" have had great success in the screening rooms. And how could it be otherwise, another of the most famous characters in his works has also had his own film: The cat.

"The cat" (Dr. Seuss' The cat in the hat) It is a children's film that will catch the attention of the little ones for its great color and for the appearance of its main character, someone who does not hesitate at any time to have fun.

What counts

The story introduces us to two brothers as different as day and night: Sally and Conrad. The antics of this one little by little end the patience of his mother, while Sally has a better behavior but has no friends because none supports her bossy character.

One day when the mother has to organize a company party, she tells Sally and Conrad that they will stay at home with her caregiver while she is away, and obviously, they won't be able to leave or do any kind of mischief that compromises so much the safety of the children, their caretaker or that of the house itself.

Thus, bored of looking through the window, comes an unexpected guest, a curious party cat with a hat that will make them see things from a totally different point of view as they did so far ...

We like it because ...

In "The cat" we find a story that seeks to reflect the most everyday reality in which there are children who are more restless than others and who seek to quench their thirst for adventures and discoveries, while others are more calm and aware that a series of rules must be followed.

It also deals with a subject that is sometimes difficult to capture in a children's film, and is that of a single mother raising two children. In addition, on the mother is the burden of having to be able to fulfill all of her labor and maternal obligations. Is it a new topic?

But this whole story that for many is well known, the great Dr.Seuss captures through a giant cat the difference between amusement and mass destruction. Do not forget that the original book and, by extension, the film have a marked didactic tone.

Values transmitted by "El Gato"

The main idea that we can find in the story of "The Cat" is that It's okay to have fun ... but you have to know how to do it. We should not be as crazy as Conrad when it comes to looking for something to entertain ourselves, but neither should we reach the extreme of Sally, who has a strong character of absolute correction.

Another strong point of the story is the power of imagination, since how do we explain that a giant cat almost two meters high and with a red and white top makes the two little protagonists enjoy their own home. It is an important lesson that with our mind we can do a thousand and one different things with which we can have a great time.

Recommended from 3 years

We must not forget that "The cat" is the film version of a classic of children's literature, so it could be appropriate for any age, although its great color, its cat protagonist and the great visual activity of the film will make children from three years onwards enjoy it much more.

There is also the animated version of this story, with original drawings by Dr. Seuss himself. Its viewing in the original version is preferable, since the metric used by the author in his works is sometimes not easy to translate into Spanish.
