An analysis of 68 safety chairs for all ages concludes that, in general, they are quite safe

Summer: hot season, swimming pools, ice cream, family visits ... it is time to travel and spend a few days on vacation (even if it is to the village house). And it's time to remember the rules of the new Traffic Law, and know if we are (or not) doing well with safety seats, elevators, Child Retention Systems (SRI) in general.

Below we will link a few posts of ours that allow you to refresh the information, but first we want to comment on an analysis of the OCU on 68 chairs for all ages, concluding that in general they are quite safe.

However, there are five models that recommend not buying: Chico Eletta (groups 0/1 and 0 + / 1), Romer Xtensafix (group 1 / 2/3) and Peg Perego (group 1) because they fail in the frontal impact, Romer Dualfix (groups 0/1 and 0 + / 1) because it has a bad design of the harness and does not properly hold newborn babies and Brevi Tao (group 1/2/3) because it is not very intuitive and results in them being committed installation errors

Not only chair choice

Because if it is not well installed, it is useless to have a safe model: the DGT states that a misuse of child seats multiplies the risk of death by four in the event of a traffic accident. We were already talking about mistakes in this post, but the OCU warns about the most common: leave the harness too loose or not securely fasten it with the seat belt, fix it badly to the Isofix anchor, or do not deactivate the front airbag when the chair is placed in the passenger seat.

Namely, although the chairs that have an Isofix system are more expensive, they are also safer, yes, the vehicle must be prepared for placement. And as you know if you have followed the news of recent months on this subject, there is a new category on the market applicable only to models of recent manufacture (in groups 0+ and 1): the easy-to-install i-Size chairs ( with Isofix), and leave little chance of the consumer making mistakes.

Whenever possible, we should use group 0+ seats, so babies travel more protected in the opposite direction to the march.

A review of the groups

First of all, it is mandatory that they travel in the Child Restraint System until they measure 1.35 meters, but they can continue using the models that include group 3 up to 36 kilos. For example, my oldest son already reaches the minimum height, but when we make long trips, we still use his lift with a backrest, since it does not exceed the weight.

In lower ages group 1 is for children from nine to 18 kilos, 0 + from birth to 13 kg and in carrycot (0) can carry up to 10 kilos. In addition to this we will find combined child restraint systems for groups 0/1 and 0 + / 1.

They stand out for their good quality

If we have already seen the recommended models not to buy, we go now with the most advisable:

  • In group 0: Romer Babysafe Sleeper offers very good frontal and lateral protection; Baby comfort Windoo + is very comfortable for the child.
  • In group 0+: Recaro Privia, with its Isofix base, offers excellent security; Chicco Key Fit is cheaper and stands out for its good safety in frontal impact.
  • In group 0/1 and 0 + / 1: with Romer Maxfix2 the risk of installation error is very low; Concord Ultimax is cheaper and with its base Isofix offers excellent security.
  • In group 1: Cybex Junofix II offers very good protection in case of side impact.
  • In group 1/2/3: Cybex Pallas 2-Fix protects well in case of side impact; Recaro Monza Nova IS has a good finish and is easy to install.
  • In group 2/3: Cybex Solution X2-Fix and Jané Montecarlo R1, both are easy to install.

I think that regardless of the legislation, this issue we must approach it from the point of view of securityDo you remember that study from Fundación Mapfre, thanks to which we learned that four out of every ten children who had lost their lives in a traffic accident did not use SRI. It's about that: to protect what we love most, to focus on prevention.
