In Babies and more Half of mental disorders begin before age 14: keys to prevent and identify these problems

Through a statement posted on the website of the Florida Department of Education, the State Board of Education reported on this new initiative, mentioning that time is a critical factor when it comes to these types of issues, since according to their data, approximately one in five young people in Florida and around the world experience some type of mental health disorder before age 25.

Starting with the last grade of primary school and until finishing high school, students will receive at least five mental health classes every year, in order to teach them to recognize the symptoms of mental illnesses or disorders and how to seek help for themselves or others.

Also, during classes Students will be educated with the various resources available to them, as well as advice about what to say or what to do when one of your classmates is dealing with a mental or emotional health disorder.

With this new program, which will be economically covered by the state legislature using a mental health support assignment, Florida joins the states of New York and Virginia, which were the first to include mental health education within their educational programs last year.

The importance of educating in mental health in adolescence

As we know, adolescence is a very important stage of development and human growth that is characterized by many physical and emotional changes, since it's the transition from childhood to adult life.

Mental health is an aspect that we must take care of during this stage, because as we know, half of the mental disorders begin before the age of 14. The World Health Organization (WHO) has listed mental health problems as one of the greatest health risks for adolescents.

And it is, since depression is the third leading cause of morbidity and disability among adolescents, while suicide is the third cause of death among older adolescents (between 15 and 19 years old).

In Babies and more, our teenagers also suffer from depression and anxiety, and it is important to identify them in time to act.

Thus It is very important that as parents we always take care of this aspect and be attentive, accompanying our children, offering them the emotional support they need, letting them know that they are loved and worth a lot, and strengthen as much as we can the relationship with them so that they have the confidence to approach us if they have any of these problems.

But also, it is important to send them information in a professional way, so programs like these are not only positive, but necessary for children of these ages, as education and prevention are keys to reduce the risk of suffering from a mental illness like depression or anxiety.
